Curriculum Emphasis 2007-2008

The following curricula comprise only a part of the total Montessori program. For a more thorough understanding of the basic Montessori philosophy and materials of practical life, sensorial, math and language, it is required for you to attend the Open House which is scheduled for your child's class in September.

September: Grace and courtesy, manners, rules and routines. Beginning introductions of Montessori materials in practical life, sensorial, language, math and a yearlong emphasis on the geometric shapes and solids. Cultural: Beginning introductions of a yearlong emphasis on History and Vertebrate Animals and their environments. Sept.-living/non-living plants/animals, becoming familiar with the different biomes of N. America and Washington, especially the temperate and deciduous forests, calendar, clocks. Music/Art Appreciation and History: Ancient Musical/Art Period. Music: "Ring around the Rosy," "Goin' Campin'," "Pack Up Your Hot Dogs," "Hiking Through the Forest," "Grizzly Bear," "The Bear," "The Bear Went Over the Mountain," "The Paul Bunyan Song," Game: "Little Brown Bear." Cooking: Circle Snacks, Awesome Apple Tree, Crunchy Apple Snacks, Owl Cakes. Show 'n' Tell: something living, something non-living, a N. American forest animal, some kind of timepiece. October: Continue with grace and courtesy and introduction to Montessori materials. Cultural: History/Science-continue with calendar and clock work and biome study-wetlands, introductions to prehistoric life-sea life, fish beginning life on land, amphibians, reptiles (dinosaurs), birds and early mammals. "Fossil" Dig. Vocabulary introductions-prehistoric, fossils, paleontologist, various dinosaur names. Halloween traditions. Field Trip to Pumpkin Patch. Cystic Fibrosis Mini March. Art: Introduction to sponge painting, rubber stamp art, crayon resist, and other Halloween art. Music and Art Appreciation: Medieval Art/Music Period. Music: Songs: "The Dinosaur Race," "The Dinosaur Parade," "The Dance Contest," "Ornithomimus," and others "Columbus was a Sailor," "Three Little Witches," "In a Cabin," "Picka, Picka, Pumpkin," "Where is Thumpkin?". Cooking: Nachos and Cheese, Pigs in a Blanket, Dinosaur Bones, Pumpkin Pizzas, Cool Jack o' Lantern. Show'n'Tell: Something that is a circle, something that is a triangle, something that is a square, a dinosaur, a Halloween item. Sign Language/Spanish.

November: Grace and Courtesy and further introductions to the Montessori materials. Cultural: History-Washington (elem.)-pioneers. Continue with Biome study with emphasis on ponds and rivers and the spawning salmon. Art: Thanksgiving art, tissue paper art. Music/Movement: American Folk Dances, Songs: "I'm a Little Turkey," "Pop Goes the Weasel," "King Salmon," "Over the River and Through the Woods." Music/Art Appreciation and History: Baroque Music/Art Period. Cooking: Cinnamon Puffs, Popcorn, Gobble Up Peanut Butter Sandwich or Thanksgiving Cornbread, Hibernation Creation. Show 'n' Tell: Something that is a rectangle, Something old or historical from your family or else where, Family picture time line showing great-grandparents (if possible), grandparents, parents, and child(ren), a pentagon. December: Continue in sequence of Montessori materials. Cultural:--History-continue calendar and clock work, Polar biome. Christmas art and traditions, making decorations and gifts, Christmas art. Music: "The Mountains," Christmas songs. Cooking: Playdough ornaments or Painted Cookies, Christmas Snow Logs, Candy Cane Reindeer. Show 'n' Tell: Something that is a hexagon, a special Christmas ornament. Sign Language & Spanish.

January: Continue sequence of Montessori materials. Cultural: History-Martin Luther King Jr., monthly calendar, months of the year, ocean environment: Science: study of fish, characteristics, parts, and habitat. Art: Collage, Torn Paper Art, Crayon Resist underwater scene, Winter Art. Music/Art Appreciation: Renaissance Music Period: Beethoven. Music: "The Swim," "Three Little Fishies," "Oh! You Beautiful Fish," "Three Jolly Fishermen," "Frosty the Snowman." Cooking: Snowball shake, Hot Apple Cider with Cinnamon Sticks, Fish Sticks with Tartar Sauce or Tropical Fish, Tuna Treats. Show 'n' Tell: Something that is an octagon, A fish (real or stuffed), a trapezoid. Sign Language & Spanish.

February: Further Montessori materials. Cultural: History-continue calendar work. Science: study of amphibians, characteristics of chaparral and tropical forest biomes. Art: Valentine art, amphibian art, Patriotic Art. Music/Art Appreciation: Classical Period Music: "The Groundhog," "Listen to the Frog", "Growing Up", "The Frog in the Bog", "Three Cheers for the Red White and Blue", "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "I'm a Little Green Frog", "El Coqui(The Frog)." Cooking: Dog Kabobs, Valentine Cookies, Red white and Blue Fruit Salad, and Cherry Tarts. Show 'n' Tell: a trapezoid, a sphere, an amphibian (real or toy), a United Sates Symbol, something that is a cylinder. Sign Language/Spanish

March: Harder Montessori materials, with special emphasis on sounds and reading materials. Cultural: St. Patrick's Day and Easter traditions, Spring. Science: study of the desert biome, study of Reptiles, characteristics, parts, and habitat. Art: St. Patrick's and Easter art, Easter baskets, Reptile Art. Music/Art Appreciation: Romantic Period. Music/Movement/ Tumbling: Songs: "Way Out in the Desert," "Alligator Pie," "Boa Constrictor," "Slither All Around," "Sss, Sss, Hisses the Snake," "The Snake Goes Slither," "I'm a Little Green Turtle," "Turtle in Your Shell," "Snap Went the Turtle," "The Crocodile" and "Reptiles! Reptiles!" Cooking: Bologna and Cheese roll, Shamrock Potion, Turtle cookies, Bunny Muffin, Dye Easter Eggs. Show 'n' Tell: a pyramid, St. Patrick's Day item or decoration, an Easter item or decoration, a reptile (real, toy or stuffed). Sign Language/Spanish.

April: More Montessori materials continue with grace and courtesy, field trips. Cultural: Science: study of birds, characteristics, parts and habitat, nests. Biome study of the Grasslands. Art: Bird Nests, Bird Art. Music Appreciation: Blues/Jazz Musical Period. Music/Movement/Tumbling: Songs: "Baby Bird Scale" song, "Five Little Chickadees," "Sing a Song of Sixpence," "Turkey in the Straw," "Had a Little Rooster," "Grasslands," "Rainier's Peak." Cooking: Quick Chick, Chocolate Pudding with graham cracker, and Count-a-Snack. Show 'n' Tell: an ellipsoid, an ovoid, a bird (real, toy or stuffed). Sign Language/Spanish.

May: Montessori materials, grace, courtesy, field trip to Pt. Defiance Zoo or Olympic Game Park. Last day picnic at Long Lake Park. Cultural: Science-Additional study of grassland biome--study of mammals, characteristics, parts, and habitats. Art: Spring art. Mammal art. Music/Art Appreciation: Note reading. Music: "Animal Fair," "Mules," "The Little Skunk's Hole," "Bill Grogan's Goat," "The Horse Went Around," "How Much is that Doggie in the Window?" Cooking: Trail Mix, Rice cake Smores, Teacher's Choice, and Eskimo Sandwiches. Show 'n' Tell: a triangular prism, a mammal (real or toy), a book about mammals, children's choice. Sign Language/Spanish.

Summer 2008: Montessori materials, grace, courtesy, walking field trips, special emphasis on arts and crafts, geographical land forms especially through the study of the Puget Sound Area, relief maps, simple machines, musical instruments-orchestral and others, sewing and recreational activities. Sports: roller skating, T-ball, bowling, basketball, croquet, badminton. Possible field trips to the bowling alley, skating rink, a stream, Sinclair Inlet, a lake, or other land/water sites.
